Disciples Women's Shared History

"Dubbed by many general church leaders throughout its history as 'one of the best things that happen among Disciples of Christ,' these assemblies have provided a means of showcasing the creative abilities of women, and have served as a training ground for preparing women for fuller participation in the total life of the church. The first Quadrennial Assembly featured women who were already in leadership positions in the general church. Freda Putnam and Hazel Rudduk were members of the United Christian Missionary Society's board of trustees, as were ten others whose names are listed in the 1957 program book. Add to them the names of program personalities who were readily recognized for prior involvement in denominational and in ecumenical circles, and it becomes easy to characterize the 1957

event as one that was highly successful because of its proven leadership. The assemblies that followed found their success in introducing leadership who, for the most part, were known beyond local and state settings, yet possessed those skills and intellects that successfully validated their right to participate as leaders. It became an established fact that after each Quadrennial Assembly there appeared in other international arenas of the church some of those Quadrennial leaders who now were being asked to take positions in total church life."
