#1 Marketing Mistake Made by Private Practice Lawyers

There are many mistakes that can be made when it comes to marketing your business, but there is one in particular that we see time and time again. It is probably one of the most important aspects of establishing yourself as an expert in your community.

So, What is This Big Mistake?

Many attorneys do not create a marketing budget. It seems that their way of thinking goes like this: “When I can establish my practice and increase my revenue, I will create a budget for a marketing plan.” Is it just me, or does that seem a bit backwards?

If you need some advice on creating a marketing plan, you can check out this article. Entrepreneur.com listed the top 5 steps to creating a plan.

Think about it. In this day and age, if you are not marketing your law firm or practice, how are you going to increase your revenue? Running a business is hard work, and sometimes we have to lose a little to gain a lot.

Sure, they may be able to get a few clients from word of mouth, but that can only take you so far. What about all of the people searching online for an attorney in their area? Who are they calling? Well, it’s pretty simple, they are calling the people that are presented to them when they scroll page one of the search engines.

I know all too well how difficult it is to run a business. With all of the expenses, it does become overwhelming. What we have to remember is that if we do it right from the beginning, the rest is all downhill.

We spoke with a representative from Law Firm SEO Pro, an attorney marketing agency who specializes in digital marketing for law firms, and what they had to say may come as a surprise to you. According to their experience with lawyers, they informed us that many lawyers who contact them for SEO will many times ask for a deal or a discount. In fact, many of them ask if they can pay them a commission when they receive a new client from their website.

While this may not seem unreasonable to some, it is not a great platform for any marketing professional. How would these leads be tracked? How would the agency know that the law firm is not getting more clients than what they are claiming to get? There are ways that a pay by client scenario could work, but performing SEO on an attorneys website is not one of them.

If you are an attorney, and understand the value of digital marketing, don’t wait until every other law firm in your city has hired a professional agency. Get in now, and you may be pleasantly surprised to see the results. You can find Law Firm SEO Pro by clicking here.

Are You an Attorney Looking to Market Your Firm Online?

It’s no secret that attorney marketing is a huge niche, and is growing rapidly due to the number of people using the internet to find a service. It can be overwhelming when you see the number of law firms showing up for your keywords. If you don’t have a budget for marketing, you are going to have to find a way to create one. It is part of being a business owner, and is more important than ever to compete with your competition.

The American Bar has a great article on creating a budget. You can read it here.

Why Would You Want to Spend Money on Online Marketing?

attorney marketing online

Just think about it. The lawyers appearing on page one of the search results are getting ALL of the traffic. Most online searches do not have patience to surf past the first page to research a good attorney. They are obviously in a bind, and the sooner they hire counsel, the sooner they can try to get some sleep at night.

Did You Know?

The website in the #1 position of the Google organic search results receives 33% of the clicks.

The good news is, you too can get some of that traffic by pushing your competitors down the page, while your website moves up in the rankings.

And the Return on Investment?

There is no specific number that can be placed on search engine optimization, however, an article published on Forbes.com states it very simply:

You simply can’t approach SEO with a short-term investment mentality. If you’re looking for a quick hold-and-flip, that isn’t SEO. If you want to know with some measure of statistical certainty what your ROI will be over the next quarter or year, that isn’t SEO. If on the other hand you’re willing to invest for the long-term, if you have a long-term vision and you’re willing to do whatever it takes to reach your end goal…that’s SEO.

Now, it is not going to provide you with a mountain of new clients overnight. In fact, the process takes time and patience, but the end result will give you a return on your investment that no other form of advertising can provide.  It’s simple math really. If 1,000 people are searching for a keyword in their city, and you are ranking on page 1, or better yet, at the top of page 1, it is inevitable that you will get the majority of the visitors coming to your website or maps listing.

The first step is to find a search engine optimization or digital marketing company that specializes in ranking law firm and attorney websites. The best way is to do a simple search, such as attorney advertising, law firm seo, or any other keyword related to online marketing for lawyers. The websites listed on page one obviously know what they are doing. How do we know this is true? Because ranking for a marketing keyword related to the law niche is just as competitive as ranking for an actual lawyer.

There is an extremely high demand for this type of service, particularly for an attorney, and the digital marketing agencies know it. Good for them for knowing how to attract new clients, because frankly, it is exactly what they will be doing for your firm.

So what are you waiting for? Your business will only grow as fast as you allow it. If you ignore your presence on the internet, it is going to ignore you.

Why Ignoring Online Marketing Will Cost You Time and Money

Hiring an online marketing agency can substantially increase your business’ revenue, whether you have a small law firm or a large car dealership.

Your small business can be branded as an industry expert, and in the process, earn your company a position in the spotlight, otherwise known as the top spots in the search engines.

The reality is that online searchers trust Google to give them the best results. Most of them have no idea that the business “hired” someone to put them there. They truly believe that Google thinks the businesses listed at the top are the best. What better referral than that of the big G?

Online traffic is only going to increase, particularly due to the fact that your future potential customers are infatuated with anything online. They live their life scrolling the internet, using apps and social media sites. Why on earth would they look elsewhere when they want to find a product or service? Just give that a minute to sink in.

The reality of the search engine listings, or SERPS, are much different from what searchers think. It is actually a process known as SEO, or search engine optimization, and this my friend is not something that just anyone can do. It requires years of research, planning, testing, and trial and error to perfect. There is no textbook that can teach you how to rank in the search engines.

Included in this SEO “stuff” is the on-page optimization, off-page, content management, link-building, social signals, keyword research, and on and on.

The on-page SEO in itself is no small feat. It requires knowing what to optimize, how to do it, how much your keyword should be present if at all, how to optimize images and so on. This alone takes many online marketers a couple years just to learn. They haven’t even touched the off-page yet.

With all of this said, in this day and age, hiring an online marketing company to build your brand and increase your traffic is a must, it is no longer an option. If you are not present online, meaning not only that you have a website, but that you have one that is ranking on page one of Google for your business related keywords, you are going to lose customers, and eventually will need to figure something out to keep your business afloat.

Called to Awaken the World

by  Jo Ann Chance  c 7/2010

Reflecting on the Word

We find that Christ not only listened

But knew the story within each woman’s heart.

Christ knows the story within each heart today—

The pain, the anguish, the despair, the hope.

But do we acknowledge one another’s stories?

Do we recognize each other’s value as seen in God’s eyes?

Through God’s grace, we are one and we are free…

Free to be all we were created to be.

God calls “whosoever”—all who believe,

All who live not bound by law but released by grace;

Called, confronted and challenged to reach out

“Where-so-ever” and “howsoever”,

To build bridges through new relationships

“When-so-ever” we can…

By making connections in Christ, globally found and affirmed;

By learning to recognize injustice in order to fight for justice;

By looking for the source of our own vision,

To share our stories,

And, in all things, to praise God,

Who is worthy of all praise!

Can we be alive in God?  –for God?

Can we start making a difference in God’s world?

We must become community,

Recognizing our oneness in the body of Christ;

Become a community of love and courage;

Able to walk side by side

With our neighbor and with Christ;

A committed community of faith,

Sharing God’s wondrous love

With all God’s people,

“Where-so-ever,” “when-so-ever.”

What does the Lord require?

To act justly and to love mercy

And to walk humbly with our God.

We are one,

Women of God,

Called to serve—

Called even to places where clearly

We do not want to go…

We are called to dance the dance of mission.

Are we awake?

Can we dance the dance?

Can we commit to prayer and action?

We can be the new thing,

For such a time as this.

Do we perceive it?

The world needs us—

Let us awaken our hearts and minds

And awaken the world

To God’s wondrous love and justice.

We are challenged.

We are called.

Let us awaken to a new tomorrow.

Yes, awake!

Awake!
